Why is classical music SO unpopular with teenagers?
see , I have never managed to comprehend this – of my group of friends , only me and my girlfriend actually listen and enjoy classical music – and every other person I know (around my age, I am 16) , thinks classical music is crap , they pay it no attention and haven’t even listened to enough of it to make that judgment.
I have never been able to understand what makes a rapper yelling abuse down a microphone , or some idiot shouting out why his life is so crap is more appealing than , for example ,Wagner’s Master singers overture or the subtlety of bach’s art of fugue or Rachmaninoff’s piano concerto’s – I know that I play the piano , organ and cello so I have access to this repertoire , but WHAT HAS GONE WRONG ???
Anyway , I would greatly appreciate it if you could come up with any answers – and ,perhaps in retrospect it is a bit of a desperate call , but are there any other teenagers out there who listen to classical music ?
Have you spoken to all teenagers? There are MANY who come here who are both teenagers and classical music lovers. The reasons for SOME teenagers not liking classical music:
1) Perception. Even though they don’t know anything about it, they *think* they don’t like it. Even though they are exposed to it every day through the media.
2) Saturation. Pop music is pumped out of every electrical orifice – all the time. This IS music to some people (all music!).
3) Gullibility. Young people are brainwashed into thinking pop music is ‘cool’. I have no idea what constitutes ‘cool’ except those thoughts, opinions and notions foisted upon the stupid and the gullible by those who seek to control them and persuade them to part with their parents’ hard-earned money in the names of greed and profit (same goes for ‘fashion’). Therefore, there being no profit in it, classical music is ‘un-cool’.
4) Sheep syndrome. « I have no identity and no original ideas of my own. Therefore, I want to be like everyone else – do the same things, wear the same clothes, have the same hairstyle, listen to the same music. I am a sheep. Ba-a-a-a-a-a-a-H! »
5) Celebrity obsession. Almost the most worrying to me, many people have become obsessed with celebrity and celebrities. Are people’s lives so empty and meaningless that they have to try to live their lives through over-paid, under-talented ‘celebrities’ like footballers, cheap models, bad singers and reality show contestants? God help us all! All readers of those appalling, vapid celebrity magazines – you know who you are!
6) Attention span. It todays’s facile, bite-sized society people are not used to concentrating on anything for more than a few minutes at a time – and prefer it if it is something that can be in the background with hardly any attention being paid to it at all. Classical music does not lend itself to this, requiring long periods of undivided attention.
You should take a great deal of pride in the fact that you can formulate you own ideas and opinions, don’t follow ‘the crowd’ and are not one of the gullible, unthinking masses. Who cares that a lot of your friends choose to miss-out on one of the greatest artforms ever conceived? THEIR loss, don’t you think? By worrying about these people, you subscribe in a small way to the sheep mentality. Disregard them, ignore them, pity them. YOU have the better deal.
