Violin mastery?
Ok, I was told my I.Q. was near genius level as a teenager. I was multi-talented and readily taught a wide variety of topics. Further, I had tremendous mathematical skills, and I could play any instrument I tried, fairly easily, and « caught on » without reading music to be able to play a few big pieces on the piano without music. Guitar, horns, keys, drums, all ok. But I never considered violin. I am just starting (with music this time) and am hoping I will be able to adapt rapidly. BUT! I do not have a feel for where I fit with the rest of the pack. I have had a few (4) lessons, learned vibrato on my own about the 2nd week after reading about it. I can do spicatto, and stuccato, (spelling??) but holding and bowing seem so foreign and cramped. I have a great musical ear, and can do the first movement of Chardas’ by Tchaikovsky by ear, but I really wonder if I’ll ever be able to play by reading music. Are there any markers to extrapolate my future???
You might consider either jazz or old time fiddle playing as these genres will be far more generous and forgiving in accepting you as an autodidact. There is little room for technical innovation in classical music. For the most part this is a result of most of the technical problems having been solved a century or more ago. Without rigorous training you can’t compete with « the pack. » But you can enjoy it on your own.
