I’m singing in my school’s talent show in five hours. What are the things I can do to prepare my vocal chords?
Everytime I ask a question about singing, 80% of the people tell me to use the « tea and honey » trick. However I don’t have etiher of those ingredients. What are some other ways I can prepare?
Also their piano, a Steinway and Sons grand, is tuned about two tones higher than my upright which I’ve been practicing on. I’ve been trying to hit the higher notes to compensate for this as I’ll be singing and playing, however everytime I get to the high part, I am forced to cross the line beween singing and screaming. Would it be easier to bring it down an octave, or is there a special tecnique for this?
A few hours isn’t enough time to make the necessary adjustments, but we can try. First of all, if people always tell you to use tea and honey (which is great advice, especially for a sore voice), then you should have bought some a long time ago. Put it on your shopping list. Second, prepare your voice by doing light, comfortable warm ups. Start at a comfortable « C, » then work your way up the scale, up and down (do, re, mi, etc). Hold each note to get a good tone. Increase the pitch by a half step each time you return to « do, » and continue this process until you are almost at your vocal peak. Don’t stretch your voice before the show.
As far as the notes being out of range, if you are musically talented then you should be able to find a few notes within the same key that will fit, usually a third below where you should be. Find an acceptable run of harmony notes and then return to the melody when it’s in range again. If you can’t do that, then pony up and belt it to the balcony. Support a big breath from the gut and let the tone flow up and out. Don’t force the note from the throat. Good luck!
