How much pedal should be used when playing Satie? (Gnossiennes)?
I’m working on Erik Satie’s Trois Gnossiennes (for piano), and this is all new to me, considering the music I usually play is from Baroque and Classical composers, which use little or no pedal. How should I use the pedal when playing Satie’s gnossiennes? They sound horrible without the damper pedal, I’m just not sure when to use it, and my book contains original scores, with no pedal markings.
I would ask my teacher, but he’s in Quebec city for 2 weeks.

Your ear should tell you, though you are unused to use of the pedal.
The bass notes, and of course, any chord (harmonic) change, with a tiny bit of elision, exactly as you render legato on the keyboard.
The first is fairly harmonically static: after the first consideration of bass and harmony change, I believe your ear for clarity (from the earlier period repertoire) will most likely prevent you from blurring the melody by holding the pedal down too long. That said, the decay time of upper register notes is much less…. The second has more harmonic changes, the third is again fairly static.
To ‘cheat’ a bit, you might listen to Aldo Ciccolini’s renditions (one masterly definitive, he recorded the complete piano works of Satie, and to me they are still one of the very best out there.)
The video with the clip seems to be a very lame and self-indulgent and weakling attempt « to go Dada…. » worthy of aggressively ignoring it if you can.
