Music Clavier Piano Solos
Is the Well-Tempered Clavichord the same thing as the Well-Tempered Clavier?

On a sheet I have telling me what I need to perform (piano) at Solo and Ensemble Festival next year, it says I need any fugue from the Well Tempered Clavichord by JS Bach. When I search sheetmusicplus.com, where I order music from, all that comes up is the Well-Tempered Clavier by JS Bach. My guess is that they are the same, but for some odd reason named differently… but you never know with these musicians… please help!
Could it possibly just be a misprint on the sheet?

Clavier is the word for Keyboard and includes (in Bach’s day) the harpsichord, organ and clavichord..but not, incidentally, the piano.

From the accounts of many biographers, Bach was very fond of the clavichord and began his keyboard studies on this instrument as a youth while living with his older brother.

The clavichord is a small desk-top instrument (but sometimes fitted with legs) with horizontally running strings struck by metal Tangents in a rather light manner. The interesting thing is that some very pleasant Vibrato effect is possible while the key remains depressed and the Tangent is still touching the vibrating string. That technique is not possible on the other claviers (nor the modern piano, for that matter), thus making the instrument capable of much subtle expression, not available on the larger and louder Harpsichord.

The Well-Tempered Clavier studies are worth playing on the piano, of course, but it must be remembered (and a well-informed piano instructor would know) that the playing characteristics and ornamentation more appropriately apply to the harpsichord. The harpshichord was not capable of dynamic changes except by coupling a second register (as on the organ) so Barouqe flourishes were employed to give the music dramatic dimension. These flourishes sometimes sound a bit rough on the piano and likely many are unnecessary as the piano does not lack for dynamic expression. Nevertheless, they are still worth playing for good keyboard development.
