when buying a used piano how can you tell if pins are loose, or not a solid as they should be?
i’m shopping the lower price points and trying to find a diamond in the (very) rough, thanks
tuning pins that are loose should be easy to spot (or hear) since those notes will be noticeably out of tune. More problematic would be bridge pins that are loose in the bridges, bridge caps that have become delaminated, cracks (that buzz) in the soundboard… and a whole host of other things. Best to take a piano tech with you ($$$) when checking your purchase options.
I suppose it’s most prudent to check for yourself first, then come back with a tech if there’s a piano you are really interested in.
