Can I publish my arrangement of a copyrighted song?
I purchased the sheet music for Leonard Cohen’s « Hallelujah » for piano/guitar/vocals. I’ve since made an arrangement for a sax quartet (which has never been performed for profit), and it sounds amazing. I’d love to make some cash by publishing it, but the original is still copyrighted by Cohen. Would I get in trouble for publishing it online? Should I send it to the company who published the p/g/v sheet music?
So far, I see that it’s not going to work…
So the most helpful answer would be to suggest how I could get the rights to use the song. Obviously it’s possible; I got sheet music for it, meaning that the publishing company got rights somehow. Should I write to Leonard Cohen?
You need to get a license from the composer. Once you have that, you can publish your arrangement and make money with it. Companies like the Harry Fox Agency can sell you a license for this purpose quickly and with a minimum of hassle. It won’t necessarily be expensive, often between $15 and $50, but it depends on exactly what type of license you’re requesting and how you’ll use the arrangement. In some cases you may have to pay royalties periodically from the proceeds of your own sales.
