How hard is it to get into the Oberlin Conservatory for classical piano?
I’ve been playing for almost 10 years and have attended Interlochen for piano (this summer will be my second time). I’m a high school junior right now and am finishing up Rachmaninoff’s Prelude No. 5 (Opus 23) and Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6. In the past I’ve done Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata and Schubert’s Impromptu in e flat (opus 90, no. 2). I’ve begun to work on the Grieg Piano concerto in A minor and some Chopin Nocturnes. What are my chances of getting in to Oberlin’s conservatory? Thanks for any insight.
Oberlin is one of the worlds elite conservatories. Every year there are about tenfold more people auditioning than spots available. Even for excellent musicians it’s tough to get in.
Your repertoire is on par for what I’d expect for someone to get into Oberlin, however you’ve provided no audio samples, without hearing you play it’s impossible to say anything meaningful about your chances. Though from what you’ve said it sounds like you’re doing everything you can to maximize your chances. At interlochen make sure to talk to the piano faculty there about schools and teachers to find out more from first hand sources.

One composition by Bach
A complete classical sonata (Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven)
One étude of virtuosity
One composition from the romantic period
One composition by a 20th or 21st century composer
All works must be performed from memory. Recordings must carry statements that the performances are memorized.
It’s not too early to start to think about which 5 pieces to select. Oberlin takes contemporary music very seriously, so don’t try to use Debussy or one of his contemporaries as your 20th century composer, instead try to find a piece by a living composer, possibly Tcherepnin, Murail, Xenakis, Stockhausen, Schnitke, Carter, Sciarrino, Lachenmann, etc.
