The concept of land and First Nations (of Canada)?
Thanks for all the answers, I realize I post a lot and might be annoying… sorry for that…
anyways,
I’ve read that for the First Nations, the land is not something that can be partitioned off to be sold. I don’t really want to generalize though because I know that their are over 600 bands in Canada.
So my question, is this actually a factual generalization (true about all First Nations in Canada, at least historically)? If it is, does it mean that every single treaty made with the Crown to cede land was dishonest in some way? Thanks.
I am not really sure if this is answering your question but as far as I know, when a first nations band member has built a house on their property/land on the reserve, they can not sell it to a « non-status indian ». The native person can be from any reservation, you need to be a part of a band though.
As far as « getting » your piece of land, on the reserve where I am from, you need to be placed on a waiting list, you pick the spot where you would like to build your house, and then it’s basically yours.
