The Real Book question.?
I’ve been playing classical piano for quite a few years and now I’m interested in learning jazz piano. I learned about The Real Book while searching for jazz books. My question is, which version should I buy? I know that Hal Leonard has made several « legal » versions of it. Also, what other books could be useful if I want learn jazz (and also blues)?
I prefer the Chuck Sher Real Books (volumes 1-3, Latin, All-Jazz, and Standards) and other Sher publications such as the World’s Greatest Fake Book. For piano and theory you can’t beat Mark Levine’s « The Jazz Piano Book » and « The Jazz Theory Book »; as a woodwind player I’ve found the latter volume especially helpful.
Books are certainly useful, but no comprehensive approach to learning jazz is complete without emphasizing the importance of listening- ultimately not only those who play your own instrument, but also singers, horn players, and guitarists (you can learn a lot about phrasing from listening to singers and horn players). Since you have a background in classical music I would recommend two pianists: John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet and Art Tatum (who at first may seem overwhelming; I recommend him because his output is a shining example of an improviser who develops ideas like a composer). Improvisers must develop ear/hand coordination; eye/hand coordination can be used to some degree to develop the ears, as can studying transcriptions of jazz performances while listening to the companion recording.
