How to become better at composing classical music?

I am the top french horn player in my high school and ive been playing for 6 years. I understand basic music theory. I am trying to become better at composing classical music. I listen to Bach, Mozart, and other great composers and i study their music to see why their music sounds so good. What else can i do to improve? I own Finale 2011 music notation software as well.

If you don’t have a natural talent for composition it takes a lot more work. First of all, congrats on the French Horn, but if you only have basic music theory, it wont help you that much in composition. Because if you want to compose for a full orchestra, you should probably know how every thing works. Knowing basic piano helps too, because that way you can try out harmonies and melodies yourself at the keyboard, and you will have a better understanding of clefs, technique and note relations. Also while music theory is a start, if you get into harmony and counterpoint you will know a lot more on chord progressions and from that be able to understand the Bach and Mozart pieces that you like to listen to.

Also Finale is great for writing down your ideas, but it wont make you a better composer, that’s all you.
