trying to learn how to tune a piano, any pointers?? what type of kit should I get etc.?
I am trying to find a good kit to tune an upright piano, the cost of having it tuned is so expensive that the price of a tuning kit has me thinking I could save alot of money by tuning it my self. Anyone out there ever tuned a piano?
How easy is it?
What type of kit would you recommend??
Should I get a video or a book for instruction?/
Any serious help would be appreciated!
Hello!
I was once just like you, thinking that I will learn to tune the piano myself to save the costs. So I bought a book (looked up on Amazon, and chose one which was most popular on tuning the piano and had the best feedbacks), and then booked a professional to come and tune (so I could learn by watching him). Well, as it turned out, I realised I don’t even have the strength to turn that special wrench when performing the tuning. Also, he spent like 3~4 hours and when I worked out the per hour cost, it was actually pretty reasonable.
If you still insist on doing it yourself, I would suggest getting an electronic tuner (like those from Korg) and learn as much as possible whilst the professional is doing a tuning for you. That’s better than reading from a book or watching a video. You can record what he says and ask as much questions as possible whilst he is there.
