Tune drums to find specific tones?

I would like to be able to know how to tune my drums to match a certain tone. For instance, in the intro to « Down with the Sickness » by Disturbed, the drums have a deep sound with almost no echo, or like songs by Avenged Sevenfold and other hard rock/alternative/metal, where the bass drum sounds « clicky » and also nearly echo-less.

I don’t necessarily need to be told how to achieve these exact sounds (but it would be great if I was!) but I would rather have a guide or formula (like loosen resonant skin and tighten batter skin to get___ sound or vice-versa; or hide dirty laundry in drum to dampen the sound, etc.) so that I can change the sound to find one I like.

I also understand that professional drummers have trigger kits, microphones and sound engineers at their disposal, so some sounds may not be able to be matched by a poor college student.

Any links to guides as well as information on getting certain kinds of tones will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah like you said, much of that sound is in the processing not the tuning. This handbook will teach you more than you ever imagined about tuning, head selection and getting different tones if you take your time, read it and practice different tunings. It ain’t called the drum tuning bible for nothin’.
