What gives a piano that black gloss finish?
Those pianos dont really look like they’re made from wood. Does the black stuff ruin the sound? because most of the pianos I see aren’t covered in that.
Lacquer. Lots and lots of lacquer. I personally find these visually repulsive – but many people think that they are lovely. I find *anything* glittery/sequined/super-shiny/etc. to look cheap – as if they are covering up something inferior. I often caution flutists to NOT buy *a purple flute* for example – these are terrible, and paint does no good. There are a a few fine saxophone companies that make black or midnight blue bodies – that is fine, because the workmanship is still excellent. However, per se – the black lacquer finish does not harm the sound.
There is a joke among professional musicians – when playing in a restaurant, etc, where there is already a grand piano in place, but we wonder what is plays like, we often ask « how’s the piano? » The punchline response is, « Great! We just painted it last week! » This is why most fine pianists would rather bring their own electronic keyboard to a gig, than play some PSO – piano-shaped object.
