i need some sexy, sultry jazz/blues/piano music…?
this boy and i are hopeless romantics. i’m making a playlist of music to listen to while we… you know…. haha
we are both musicians and love jazz and blues, but i’m having trouble thinking of some music. i would really like some solo piano stuff, any suggestions?

I’m going to give you two lists of songs – one for the “we-wanna-make-love” evening with your boyfriend, and one for the “we-wanna-make-sex” evening with your boyfriend.

For the first list…The amazing pianist Duke Ellington and saxophonist extraordinaire John Coltrane teamed up to create a few songs that fit this exact category (although they can be a little slow compared to the speed that most couples…you know.) There is a song called “In a Sentimental Mood” that is the quintessential love song. (I first came across it on the soundtrack for the movie “Love Jones” back in 1997.) Duke and Coltrane also made a similar song called “My Little Brown Book” that runs along these same lines. Another song you might want to try is Hank Mobley’s saxophone version of “I Should Care”. For piano solos, try a song called “Dindi” by pianist Eliane Elias. When I think of sexy, I don’t normally think of piano solos, but she does a good job of making it romantic. Thelonious Monk is an experimenter when it comes to music, but he has a song called “Reflections” that sounds like the fingers of a lover dancing across the body of his beloved. (I’m a poet, so forgive the drippingly-sweet metaphor.)
Now for the second list…I would actually recommend staying away from jazz. Jazz can be very contemplative, relaxing, reflective, and cerebral. I’m also a piano player, and it’s perfect for romance, but imperfect for…um…getting’ your grind on. I’m a black man in my mid-30’s raised on soul and funk and R&B, so I’ve seen the power of what these can do. BUT for your own good, stay away (and I mean FAR AWAY) from the mess of cliche R&B and pop-R&B that is overplayed on the radio. (For example, I love Marvin Gaye, but if I hear “Let’s Get It On” one more time, I’m gonna throw someone into oncoming traffic.)
It sounds like because you and your boyfriend are both musicians with a tendency toward the instrumental, I’m going to recommend some “out-of-the-box” stuff for you.
Everyone knows Sade and how overused her music has become for the bedroom, but few people know that the musicians that made her music possible actually went out on their own to put instrumental albums together. Their group name is Sweetback, and if you get the chance, pick up their self-titled debut album to start with. Listening to one track from the album is fine, but it doesn’t give the same experience as listening to the whole CD. (I will warn you, though, that it can be a bit slow.)
If you’re even a little into R& B, then stop what you’re doing right now, and purchase, download, or steal Vikter Duplaix’s album “Bold and Beautiful.” There are definitely R&B overtones to it, but no R&B station will ever play it because it’s more of that “Chill/Lounge/Downtempo/Drum&Bass” type music. (For example, track #2 called “Make a Baby” will make you wanna go right now and make a baby.)
For something with a bit less R&B and a bit more jazz, try Gretchen Parlato. Her self-titled album can be sampled through her website www.gretchenparlato.com. I guarantee you’ll love her voice (it’s sweet like syrup and comforting like warm cotton.) When you visit her website, the music starts automatically at the bottom of the screen. In fact, forget everything I said about Vikter Duplaix. You and your boyfriend may be more of a Gretchen Parlato type of couple.
