Suggestion for a Nocturne-esque type of piano piece for an intermediate pianist to play at a recital in June?
I am an Intermediate+ pianist. I have an upcoming recital in June, in which I must prepare a piece for. In recent years, I have always come in second among the non-adult pianists, and I wish to have a dramatic and challenging piece to play. With a week’s practice, I can master anything at the Faber & Faber Intermediate 4 Level. Within six months time, I could most likely take on something a bit harder. I wish to acquire a song that is similar to Camille Saint-Saën’s Danse Macabre (mastered within four days; too easy for the recital) or one of Chopin’s nocturnes. I need a suggestion for a gothic, « depressionist », beautiful sort of piece that isn’t MUCH too far out of my league.
Hopefully with someone’s suggestion, I’ll be able to out-play the infamous Phillip, the boy with his Beethoven who always seems to be one note ahead.
You might like to take a look at Edward MacDowell’s pieces. Quite moody and challenging for mid-level players, and a lot of bang for the buck.
