What is the advantage of file system partitioning in unix/linux?
Apart from better organization, is there any further advantages. Particularly I want to know the use of /vol directory
The main advantage is to act as a fail-safe to ensure that your system remains stable should one ‘root’ program run amok and fill up all the space on the partition. By default, most file systems restrict all accounts except root to leave up to 5% free space.
For example, if one root program floods your log file and it doesn’t have a limit, it would fill up your HD and suddenly your database will not be able to save any data. Thus you could be losing important client data. Or even if you were playing a video game, suddenly you wouldn’t be able to save your game.
Aside from that, there isn’t really any significant advantage.
The /vol directory is not a standard Linux Hierarchy Directory. What distribution are you using?
