Well, Jazz trio playing problem…?
I’m a young jazz pianist and have been playing in a jazz quartet, but the sax player wants to leave now (it’s the seventh horn player that leaves the band) so I am tired of hiring new horn players and would like all the help and resources possibles to master the art of jazz piano trio playing
Well, I don’t live in USA. In my country jazz is not really popular and improvisation among horn players here is rare.
Most of them like to mock me and come just to play a few times with us and then they leave cuz they really never cared.
I’m not really sure if I’m the problem, cuz the bass player and the drummer have always remained the same two guys
Listen to « The In Crowd » by Ramsey Lewis trio. It’s a live album and they do a pretty good piano trio album. You being the piano player really has to do a lot of rhythm, melody, harmony and well that’s pretty much everything. I personally don’t care for piano trios too much. It just feels like there’s no real « solo » type instrument, bass and piano normally being part of the rhythm section. And I wouldn’t be surprised if most people felt the same way. My suggestion is to continue to seek some horn players or maybe even jazz violinist, guitarist, flute? Or another possibility would be to learn to play a keyboard or synth type instrument. I personally like synths in jazz like Zawinul, Jan Hammer, or Herbie Hancock. You could continue to use the piano but also switch to keyboard for a solo in some songs. Up to you of course but there are some ideas to think about.
