What are the best live houses to book your local band in Tokyo.?
I hear that most places fit into two categories
1 Pay to play – screw that, I already pay 10% of my salary to rehersal studios
2 Buy your own tickets to sell for a slightly higher price so you make a tiny bit. I like this system, I’m not looking to get rich, I just want my music to pay for itself.
3 Play for free – I understand that bars and cafes have to do this sometimes, this is what I’ve been doing so far and sometimes I get tips.
The thing is, most of my friends are not rich, I could easily sell a bunch of 1000 or 1300 yen tickets (probably way more than the average local japanese band) but a lot of places charge 2000-3000 and I don’t think I’d have an easy time with that.
So are there any good venues that use the second system without high ticket prices? Anywhere inside Tokyo is fine.
You seem to have some knowledge about how things happen. And tips don’t pay the bills, right? Recognize that you are in a very competitive business. I wish you luck, but that is just a simple fact. I agree with you that #1 sucks green toe jam.
My opinion? You start with #3. If you are any good you can progress to #2. If not, you stay at #3. If you are really bad, you go back to #1.
I hate to be the one to clue you in to this, but people pay money to listen to music they like. Repeat that a few times. The levels you mentioned go from #1 to #3 to #2.. Never heard your music. And unless you can compete with some of the most famous bands ever known, I don’t want to hear it. And a lot of other people will feel the same. This may put you in level #3 for a lot of people.
Don’t get me wrong. I have respect for artists. You guys are going way against the odds. I wish you luck. But odds are, you will fail.
