Who is your favorite pianist when it comes to the Piano Sonatas of Scriabin ?
There are many but I feel Horowitz was the ultimate interpreter of Scriabin’s piano sonatas.
I am not sure that he recorded all of them. Is there a box set of him playing all?
Horowitz certainly was a champion of Scriabin. He did a great deal in obtaining recognition for the mad genius of Scriabin’s music.
I have Ashkenazy’s versions of the sonatas and find them very satisfying. Other pianists also have been successful in recording them (Robert Szidon comes to mind). Complete sets are available from both pianists.
I don’t know whether Horowitz recorded them all. Such a set would be well worth the listening time. It seems many of the great pianists would have given us a great gift by devoting them time to creating comprehensive sets of such music for ‘posterity’ in the same way that Julius Katchen put together the complete Brahms piano music. Too bad Van Cliburn didn’t do the same with the late Brahms solo piano works – his versions are equally definitive.
It would be an interesting project for one of the newer batch of super virtuoso pianists to record a complete set of the Scriabin solo piano works – maybe Hamelin or Kissin.
