Baldwin Hamilton Baby Grand Piano – Possible Value?
I’m considering purchasing a Baldwin Hamilton Player Piano. It’s considered an antique since it’s quite old. Serial Number is 11829, mahogany finish. Plays great, nice tone, no cracks on the soundboard – pretty much the piano itself is in great condition. However, the player part does not work, some of the hammers are a little worn, and there are a number of scratches on the piano here and there. The scratches are really not bad… it’s ok for it’s age. Anyone have an idea what a possible value might be for this piano? I realize it will cost a lot to get the player part working and I don’t mind that right now – I’d be willing to get it restored overtime. I just really want to make sure I’m not overpaying for it. The owner said she purchased years ago for $3K. She is selling to me for $2500. Any advice?
It sounds like that piano is pretty old, but still in good condition. Some people say that pianos age like wine. Im not so sure becuz Im not there, but I would say if it is as good as you say it is, I think $2000 is good. $2500 sounds too much, aspecially if some of the hammers are worn down. You can also fluff them up by simply poking all of them with pins. It will bring the hammers back to life somewhat and it will make the action somewhat softer. If he bought this thing years ago for $3000, and he only takes $500 off? I think $2000 or even less is good, but its up to you. Again, Im not there to see what it looks like either. I have worked in a music store for a while. Its up to you.
