I’m looking for a piano solo, classic or modern, that suits a high level of performance, any recommendations?
I favor strong music, fast and lively, but also do well in softer more soulful music. I’m really looking for anything that sounds good and meets my expected standard, which is around say, playing revolutionary etude, Chopin, Fantasie Impromptu, Chopin, Mozart’s sonatas, etc. If you have any beautiful music, advanced or simple, please answer with your suggestions. I am confused – did you post this ostensibly to *brag* about what you think you can play? – because if your technique and musicianship is advanced, so should be your knowledge of literature, or your knowledge of resources that have graded indices of the piano solo literature. As a piano competition judge, I see students come in every year with all of the works you mention – and proceed to butcher them. Do you have a fine teacher? What do THEY say? Do the names « Friskin and Freundlich » ring a bell? all decent pianists own that volume – so that they can explore lit they do not know. Do you peruse catalogs of modern publishers? My husband, who is a very fine pianist, is currently studying the music of A J Kernis – and loving it. Guaranteed, you will find a lot FEWER pianists that know this – and will be entranced if YOU can learn it. Some is only available in scrip from on-demand at Schirmer (one, I am transcribing in Sibelius – you could go BLIND from the scrip!). Like Ligeti? What about « Devil’s Staircase »? It’s a big world – and if you are seriously studying, you can take one route – and if you just seek flash/cash/trash – you take another.
