I can play bass and sing at the same time…but so far only with root notes. How will I ever get past that?

I’m 15 and have been playing for a little over a month now. I know that sounds stupid. I mean, you’re probably thinking I suck terribly and can barely make a decent sound with it. Well, I practice at least a half hour everyday (self taught with Hal Leonard book) and have been quite hard on myself, so miraculously I can actually keep a decent beat in my humble opinion and play the root notes of a song. I recently discovered I can also sing along which is nice. Just so we’re clear, I’ve played piano for quite some time now as well so it’s not like I was thrust into music with no knowledge. I’m just wondering how I can get past only playing root notes. I know you can play other notes in the chord and all, but it’s like then I can’t sing with it b/c it’s so difficult. Does it just take time? Does playing root notes really suck all that much for only playing for a month? Thanks in advance…..~Indie G (Really hope that made sense…lol)
Wow. A whole month and you are not as good as Jack Bruce yet?
It usually takes five, maybe six weeks to become a virtuoso.
Just keep practicing. You will get it.
