Help with piano pedaling?
I am self teaching piano. I have a great book. I am learning pedaling. The damper pedal. I know the sign and how to play it but at the end of the pedal like where it says lift up or shows the symbol for lift up, in one song I am playing it said make sure to lift up as you play the d now does that mean while I play it I lift up so it doesn’t really get the full damper sound?
Then it said in the next time to play the f sharp first then hold pedal down.
Is that how pedaling works in general? I just at the end of the pedal sign lift up while I hit the note then in the second line, play the first note there and put the pedal down for the rest of the sign?

I think you are taking the score too seriously, which is not so a bad thing, but pedalling doesn’t always work like that.
Usually the rule of thumb is not to blur notes which are dissonant (eg. tones or semitones apart) – unless you are looking for that blur effect.
The only way to get your head around pedalling is to listen out and find out what sounds best. Follow the score, but only to an extent that you don’t become a machine. You’re the pianist. You make the judgement!
