Some help with poetry please?
I’m studying the poem « Piano and Drums » by the Nigerian poet Gabriel Okara and I don’t know what he means by « groping hearts in green leaves »…the poem is about his struggle between his own African cultures and Western cultures that accompanied the colonization of his country. Here is stanza 2, describing his memories of his youth:
And my blood ripples, turns torrent,
topples the years and at once I’m
in my mother’s laps a suckling;
at once I’m walking simple
paths with no innovations,
rugged, fashioned with the naked
warmth of hurrying feet and groping hearts
in green leaves and wild flowers pulsing.

African hearts (people’s love of their country, families, lifestyle) living (pulsing) and groping (searching) for resolution in their lives in their native environment where they live among plants with green leaves, and wild flowers (beautiful and free native Africans) with a lifestyle that is natural and free (wild) in comparison to the encroaching and less natural cultures from the West that are very foreign and opposite to the African culture.
