Piano Question:?
I am an intermediate pianist (perhaps early intermediate) who currently does not have a teacher. I’ve worked on some classical, soundtracks, and would like to explore some jazz. In other words, I am into any and all genres. At this point, I really don’t know where to go with the piano. Can anyone give me some suggestions as to some songs/works that would be good to improve my paino repetoir as well as some songs that are fun to play? Below are some examples of what I’ve already done.
In terms of classical, I’ve done: a couple of Beethoven’s sonatas (Sonata quasi una Fantasia, and Pathetique (the Adagio cantabile part); a few of Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier preludes. I’ve also worked on some movie soundtracks (Pride and Prejudice and Memoirs of a Geisha).
Also, if anyone knows a good way to find a good teacher, that would be appreciated. I have a limited budget so it would be wonderful to find someone who could work with such restraints.
Music suggestions:
-The soundtrack to the movie « The Piano » by Michael Nyman. Should be right at your level, with maybe a bit of a challenge.
-Claude Debussy’s four-part « Suite bergamasque »
-Any of the Brahms Waltzes, which usually come paired in two versions: regular and simplified
-For improving your technique until you get a teacher, try Carl Czerny’s « School of Velocity, » which is a book of exercises more difficult than the standard Hanon exercises.
As for finding a teacher, here’s a tip to find the best:
keep up with the local papers and student news to see who is winning piano competitions. Usually winners are announced with their teachers’ names. Call those teachers! Even if they are not cheap or not accepting new students, they will know who the best teachers are in the area. Also call piano stores. They usually have piano teachers on staff. For a reasonable price, you can take piano lessons at the store.
Good luck!!
