We need to tune our baby grand piano, should we do it ourselves?
Of course we will get the proper tools, do any of you have experience with doing it yourself, with being self taught, any horror stories?
You can try, although unless you have piano tuning theory under you belt, I don’t think you will have much success. There are several things you need to know and then after knowing, you need to master i.e. setting the temperment, tuning unisons and setting the pins.
There are electronic strobes made especially for pianos you can buy to help with tuning, however they are pretty expensive.
There are many books available on tuning, however it would be better to have a live tutor explain how to tune the piano.
Piano tuning is not an exciting adventure. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to bang on the keys for hours at a time.
I would pay the $90 or so and have a professional tuner tune you piano. In 1-2 hours he is finished and can enjoy playing on a tuned instrument.
