How should i go about repairing the trim of my door?
I came home one day and found that the sliding bar to my screen door was ripped half way out of the trim of my door along with a chunk of wood, as if someone tried to slam the screen door open or something. Several thoughts ran through my mind, like how much is this gonna cost to repair or replace? Does my home insurance cover this, or should i even make a claim on this it seems so small, but if its expensive? But the real question is how should i go about replacing it, i cant make up my mind.
By « sliding bar », I’m going to guess that you mean the pneumatic closer mechanism that slowly closes the door. This normally attaches to the door jamb. If the door is opened suddenly and beyond it’s normal travel range, it will rip out the screws or even a chunk of the door jamb. This can happen if a strong gust of wind flings the door open. There is usually a chain with a spring dampener attached near the top of the screen door to limit the amount the door can open. If you’re not up to replacing the entire door jamb ( which would include the entry door ) you could make a repair by screwing a piece of 1×4 which has been cut to match the width of the wood between the main door and the screen door. Make the length about 12 inches and screw it to the jamb (over and covering up the ripped out chunk) with about 8- 2″ or 2.5″ screws even spaced. Then screw the pneumatic closer to the scabbed on board. You may have to re-position the pneumatic closer (about 3/4 inch towards the door handle) where it is screwed onto the screen door to allow the door to close properly . It’s an obvious repair, but it will prevent you from having to replace the entire door and jamb.
