Pleyel pianos and Steinway pianos?
Hi! I heard a Pleyel piano played by Aldo Ciccolini in the 1960s and it seemed that the piano can sing cantabile better than a modern Steinway. What do you think of the Pleyel pianos in the 1920s – 1960s period? Are they very good? How about Steingraeber pianos? Do you have any experience with these pianos?
I don’t really expertize in comparing accoustic pianos, but…
Steinway is renowned for making extremely high-quality pianos. Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg’s dedication for the future was « to build the best piano possible ». He established at his company three basic principles:
« Build to a standard, not a price »
« Make no compromise in quality »
« Strive always to improve the instrument »
Research and inventions by the company have earned it so far around 130 patents, a greater number than any other piano company. Many people, including the world’s top pianists, have since then chosen Steinways for concerts.
I have played and heard a couple of Pleyels, and they are very good.
Frédéric Chopin admired Pleyel pianos. The piano brand was named after Ignaz Pleyel, a piano builder of the Classical period. Chopin once remarked, « Pleyel pianos are the last word in perfection. » Pleyel pianos are also another example of high-quality accoustic pianos, but Pleyels are not as renowned as Steinway. I think Pleyels can sign cantabile just as good as a modern Steinway. Some might think differently. Who knows, different people have different opinions. I think the Pleyels of the 1920 – 1960s have a remarkable quality.
Modern pianists such as Argerich, Perahia, Barenboim, Pollini, et cetera, choose Steinways, but the great pianists and composers of the past, who died before Steinway was founded, such as Chopin, Debussy, Stravinsky, and Ravel, preferred Pleyels. Pleyel was more renowned in the past. I think Pleyel pianos are a good choice.
I’m not familiar with Steingraeber & Söhne, which means I can’t give you much useful information about the quality of those instruments. I apologize.
