What Should My Guitar Plan Be?
I want to start learning acoustic guitar. I am a total beginner but I played alto saxaphone for 5 years so I know how to read sheet music. I found that some people say you can learn online from sites like www.guitartricks.com and books like the hal leonard guitar method series. I was wondering if these plans would work also:
1) The self taught plan mentioned above. No lessons ever
2) I take lessons to learn the basics and then I quit lessons and learn styles on my own
3) I learn the basics on my own and then take lessons to perfect my skills and learn a style
Can I please have which one you suggest and a reason? Easy 10 points!
okay here it is off the top of my head
1) pros:
you dont pay to learn guitar
you get to learn your favourite jams immediately from the start
there are plenty of internet resources to help
CONS:
you dont learn proper technique
alot of these sites are by ameteur guitarists who love to bulls*it
the tabs can be wrong
you dont get an overall view of your instrument, you just learn how to play note for note
2) PROS
a teacher is invaluable as they have more experience, & can refine your techniques
you learn straight from the start
you can measure your progress per lesson
just in general a teacher is great, your aware of playing infront of somebody so you want it to sound good.
as humans we tend to fall into bad habits because its easier, but hwen people are listening we are painfully aware of what we play
3) to be honest it’s a s*it idea, to untrain bad habits takes AGES
an eg i played guitar (i still sorta do) i never took lessons and went about it as you are suggesting in NO.1)
i’ve always wanted to play bass my dad started me on guitar, eventually i took bass lessons etc. from day 1 i noticed i had bad mistakes, one was that my thumb used to wrap around the neck of my guitar & be visible to listeners (really it should push against the back of the neck in the centre) OR my wrist was always at an angle that prevented me from getting proper force on my strings.
basically these bad habits are alright when starting off, but when you go to play some hard stuff its horrible to get right.
just trust me fork over some money and get instruction its so much better & as somebody said ANY pro guitarist will recommend lessons.
EG look at Flea from RHCP he was thought bass by Hillel Slovak (the original RHCP guitarist who died from an overdose, listen to Freaky Styley to hear Hillels AMAZING work, Frusciante (present guitarist) was hugely influenced by hillel)
Flea then took lessons, he right now is attending some college to learn music theory etc.
even Curt Cobain took lessons, Cobain used to bulls*it alot in interviews to annoy the reporters. so dont trust his interviews (read Heavier Than Heaven its his biography, very well acclaimed and a good music read)
its like martial arts (which i do too) if you go to the MA section on yahoo answers you will see »can i learn martial arts from the internet or books »= »no would you trust a surgeon that learnt via dvd? »
same applies pretty much for guitar or anything in life.
