Who is a better pianist, Nicky Hopkins or Vladimir Ashkenazy?
Recently, in the CLASSICAL forum…there was a question asking about who the piano greats are. The winner was determined to be a pianist by the name of Nicky Hopkins. I think it is probably obvious that I thought this answer to be simply ludicrous. But for the fun of it..I thought I would pose this question and ask everyone who they think is better…Hopkins, or Vladimir Ashkenazy (clearly a better pianist)…now I know you are thinking that my line of questioning is extremely biased (which it is)…but that answer was just so dumb that I had to ask this. I will seriously consider any response in favor of Hopkins if you can actually back it up. I seriously want ot know how ANYONE could think that he is a classical piano great. REALLY….someone convince me! I will try to understand this!

Nicky Hopkins is one of the great session keyboardists, primarily from the rock genre who played with the Beatles, the Stones and the Who. At what he does, he would be considered one of the best. However, that is a fairly narrow field. Rock music has only been around about fifty years and already it is starting to decline. Recent additions to the genre have been, for the most part appalling, indicating the state of rock music these days.
Vladimir Ashkenazy on the other hand, has had a prolific career. There is little in the regularly heard canon of classical music for the piano that he hasn’t recorded. Some of his interpretations have not reached the zenith for particular works, far far more have been exemplary and he has come to typify the modern concert pianist. He has done little with the instrument of late, being more interested in conducting due in part to health conditions and perhaps to some degree being a little burned out as a solo performer. In any event, he will be sure to be considered one of the great pianists of the twentieth century.
Overall it is a far less than appropriate comparison. Akin to comparing Jimmy Page with Julian Bream. The only common ground for comparison is the instrument – and that alone is not enough.
