Weird question to do with sheet music?
Why did old sheet music (from 1960s) always print the songs in the wrong key, usually a tone lower than the original recording?
I’ve got some of my own Beatles songbooks, and for example it gives you Come Together and says the song is in C, which it isn’t. Also some Paul Simon songs are not correctly ‘keyed’, and I found myself having to find the right chords myself.
Anyone know why that is?
The music publishing companies carried on the old habit of employing ‘band leaders’ to write up manuscripts from popular recordings well into the 1970′s.
The keys were normally ‘adjusted’ to fit brass instruments which was what the band leaders would normally have scored a piece of music for!
It took me about 10 years to figure out The Beatles Blackbird because it was in ‘G’, but had been manuscripted in ‘F’!
Still…At least I can play it!
