Need tips on how to successfully play Carl Maria von Weber’s Grand Duo Concertant on the piano.?
Am having trouble with the runs that involve minor 3rd intervals.
I hope it goes without saying that you need to find a good fingering, write it in, and play it that way a zillion times slow enough that you feel your fingers grounded and secure in each key, so that it becomes natural.
I can’t say I know this piece in particular, but I can give some ideas for progressive thirds. Liszt, a contemporary of Weber, wrote many pieces in which rising thirds portrayed a ‘galloping’ effect; he recommended that they be performed by jumping and hitting each third with fingers two and four. This was usually to make sure that the performer doesn’t try to play them too connected, but it can be an effective technique for playing a lot of thirds in quick succession.
Another way would be to use 1-3/2-4 across all of them. Make exceptions for any unusual combinations of keys; keep in mind that it is more difficult to play black keys with the thumb, but this can be overcome by turning the inside of the hand in towards the keys. To practise these, it is most important that you can make each transition effectively. When you play a wrong note, it is often a result of not having been well-grounded on the previous note. Try doing them in a dotted rhythms, so that you do two in quick succession, then pause to get grounded, then another two. Switch this up so that you practise the other adjoining pairs; in this way, you will be able to go between each diad surely.
If these thirds are slower than I’m imagining, you might consider using a more legato fingering. This is a technique more common for playing contrapuntal pieces with multiple voices that need to be kept together. My prefered technique for ascending thirds in this way is 1-3/2-4/1-5/2-4/1-5 etc. until you come to the end, where I find it is best to end on either 2-4 or 1-3, or anything that lends itself to whatever comes next. This is not recommended for faster passages, where jumping between 2-4 and 1-3 is more permissible, less noticable and considerably easier.
