Out of the following piano concerti, which ones are suitible for small hands?
Beethoven: Concerti 1-5
Brahms: Concerti 1 & 2
Chopin: Concert 1 & 2
Grieg: Concerto
Liszt: Concerto No. 1
Mozart: Concerti K. 466 and K. 488
Prokofiev: Concerti 1 & 3
Rachmaninoff: Concerti 1-3
Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Ravel: Concerto in G Major
Schumann: Concerto
Saint-Saëns: Concerto 2
Tchaikovsky: Concerto 1
Chopin are relatively easy ones and can have pedal in which could cover any large chords.
Grieg should be fine… there will probably be a few leaps but they can be covered with clever pedalling like Chopin.
Mozart should be fine.
Depends the Beethoven you choose. Some will be OK, some might be a bit difficult.
Not familiar with Ravel or Saint-Saëns.
But you can really count out Brahms, Liszt, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky if you have really small hands. These men had big hands and wrote for big hands. So if you are like be you are basically screwed and will just have to be happy listening to it. It’s not completely impossible, just quite difficult. I did see a Korean girl play the Liszt once so it just depends how much you practice.
You can also stretch the spaces between your fingers. It’s hard to explain how to do it without having you infront of a piano but I’ll try. If you start with your little finger on the top note of the piano, then stretch your fourth finger as far as it will go and play that note, then stretch your third finger as far as it will go and so on with all your fingers (start at the bottom for your left hand obviously and stretch down). Keep doing that for a few weeks and you might stretch your fingers enough to be able to get an extra interval or two. Doesn’t sound that much but it will make a big difference.
