Majoring in Music w/ very little experience? – @ a Community College?
I want to learn music & I also want to attend college. I’m starting a little late @ age 25. What do you think about choosing music as my major (at a 2 year community college)?
MY GOALS:
Get to an intermediate level on piano
Understand music theory
Able to write my own worship songs
Be able to play keyboard in my church’s worship band.
I AM NOT going to college to prepare for a career. I already have a successful business that runs itself. My goal with college is to learn and acquire skills/knowledge.
If I don’t learn music and get to the point where I can play/write my own songs…I know it will be something I’ll always regret. So this is a life-long dream for me
Right now I’m going through Alfreds All in One course for the piano.
Can I get some thoughts/opinions from some of you experienced musicians? Thanks!
Hi.
Are you planning to pursue higher education? I.E. are you planning to pursue your masters and/or Ph.D.? If not, you don’t really need to go to a community college and major in music. You would need to take a bunch of general requirement courses to graduate with your A.A. (such as math, science, speech, english, etc.) Looking at your goals, I can tell you don’t need college except for the music theory part (which is only 1 or 2 courses in a community college). To play intermediate piano, write your own worship songs, and play keyboard at your church, doesn’t require majoring in music, just some private classes in piano (which you are already doing).
If it is not a career you are looking for, then you will be greatly wasting your time and resources. If it is your dream to major in music and go to college for music, it would be so that you can become a conductor, teach music in school, or play in an orchestra. You would need to pick a primary instrument (always piano) and a secondary instrument (whichever one you choose). But, since you have little experience, you would have to take lessons in another instruments. Community colleges don’t offer instrument learning. The students who go into music have already been playing music in a band or orchestra all through middle school and high school. They pay for a private teacher to give them more advanced training in their instruments. So, yeah, you got quite your work cut out for you.
But, like I said, if you’re dream is to teach music at school or write, conduct, or play orchestra, then go for it. If you just want to learn piano to play at church then you will be wasting a lot of money and time. My advice would be to just get private lessons and writing music comes from the heart. You can’t teach that anywhere. You could just take a music theory class, but that really wont help much.
Whatever you choice is, I wish you the best of luck. Follow your dreams.
