In FL Studio8, my MIDI keyboard ALWAYS records to the pattern–steps–and never to the piano roll itself. Why?

I select « automation and score », try both the pattern and song switches, have the piano roll highlighted and selected, everything. It always records to the pattern–which means it records a few notes and then stops registering the notes after the pattern’s end. Even if I set the pattern to 64 measures in size, it’s still limiting, AND the notes are always locked to the steps, which means it always sounds robotic in terms of duration and note position. What setting am I getting wrong? Is my install corrupted? I’ve done everything the youtube videos, etc. say to do. Not that hard, and it ALWAYS records to the pattern as steps. What’s up?

Press F10, go to the MIDI tab and de-select record to step sequencer. That’s all your troubles right there.
