Piano Grade 8 Abrsm Help – can I use Una Corda Pedal for the B1 piece?
I m Taking Piano Grade 8 this year ( Abrsm ) And I m Playing the Clementi Piece (B1 ).First Movement from sonata in G minor Opus 7 No 3.
Can I use Una Corda Pedal and the Right Pedal for the last few lines in the exposition and recapitulation section to emphasise the p << mp<< pp Line ? ( bars 74-80 and bars 214 to end ). I find that sometimes I can acheive pp with my fingers , but on some other days, I feel that I get a better p << pp effect using the una corda.
My teacher says that this is a piece composed in the classical period ( Footnotes reveal 1782 to be exact )and that una corda pedal was not used in that period.
However, I came across another piece by Haydn ( The English Sonata, Hob XVI / 50, also in this year's exam repertoire ( B 6) composed in 1794 with a new thematic idea in the development section which uses open pedal - that is Una corda and the Right pedal together at once.
Your advice on interpretation is appreciated.
The real purpose of the una corda is to change the timbre or the quality of the sound of the piano. Sure it might sound softer but it is better to use this on loud passages to create a unique sound. You should learn to distribute the weight of you fingers when playing. Use the dynamics to your advantage.
