Where to live: England or Germany?
Recently, my parents gave me the option of attending college and living in England or Germany. What should I choose?!?!
Here are my specifics, please read them carefully:
1. My family would be mad at me for giving up my American citizenship, which must happen if I move to Germany. (They don’t allow dual citizenship, but I BELIEVE the UK does.)
2. I speak both English and German (and also French and Yiddish), but am most comfortable with the German culture, as that’s where nearly my entire family is from.
3. If I had to choose one right now, no second-thoughts, I’d pick Germany…but maybe I’m wrong. It seems slightly more intimidating, because while I speak German, my Hochdeutsch suffers, and I’m not used to filling out paperwork, being schooled, etc. in German.
4. I’m a classical musician and fairly proficient at the piano and the violin, but I’m interested in going to law school.
You can’t obtain citizenship through a study permit anyway, so you shouldn’t let that hold you back. You have to live in a country for an extended time period (3-10 years) for work or with a partner who has citizenship in order to obtain it.
You don’t need citizenship to live in either country, so there’s no need to give up your American citizenship. If you find work or apply as a highly-skilled worker after your studies, you can eventually receive a settlement permit that allows you to reside there under most of the same conditions as a citizen.
I believe international tuition/fees will be higher in the UK than in Germany, on par with US universities. However, you have to prove you have funding for living costs in both countries.
I have dual Swedish-American citizenship and my boyfriend has British citizenship, we live in Norway. Norway doesn’t allow dual citizenship, so neither of us will be applying for it unless the rules change. However, we plan to live here long term. With just US citizenship, you’re limited to your ability to find work after studies if you want to continue living there, but this is true for both countries.
Otherwise, you’ve really answered your own question. As long as you can fulfill the language requirements to study in Germany, go for it. I’ve lived in the UK before, and while British people are great, I really dislike the bureaucracy and wouldn’t live there again. Since your interest is Germany, that’s where you should go.

You should know, however, that most European universities require a year of higher education for Americans. American high school generally isn’t enough to pass entry requirements. You need to speak directly with the schools you’re interested in to find out details.
