IS the keyboard synthesizer a separate instrument or is it something on which you can play piano etc.?
Yes, the synthesizer is definitely a different instrument than a piano. There are quite a lot of varieties of synthesizer out there, each with unique abilities as well as limitations. Some of them can emulate a piano to a degree, or at least an « electric » piano (such as a Rhodes or Wurlitzer) but most would not be able to do this. For instance, there is a class of synthesizer known as a « monosynth » that does not have the complexity to sound like a piano, and in fact can only play one note at a time. Despite (and partially because of) these limitations, they are still considered very useful. They are also relatively easy to learn synthesis on. Another type, known as an FM synth, is capable of some very complex sounds, including an electric piano, but it can be frustrating to learn how to control at times. After playing the piano for 6 years, I began to get into synthesizers, and that last link is where I learned most of what I know. The main site shows the variety of synthesizers out there, and they also have a forum to discuss anything synthesizer related. This is where the bulk of knowledge can be found.
