How do I get guitar songs sounding like the song and not just strummed chords?
With a piano, you can recognise the actual song being played, but strumming the chords on the guitar sounds bland and boring, how do I make it actually sound like the song?
Some of the answers touched lightly upon the techniques used to play a song and keep it from becoming boring. That is done by simultaneously playing rhythm chords and melody picking. Chet Atkins and Merle Travis were masters of this technique in their own fingerstyle delivery.
One particular song that can be learned using fingerstyle and rhythm techniques is the old song titled, « I’ll See You in My Dreams »–a popular song of the 1950s. Once this song is mastered then the guitarist can take other avenues using the same style of playing.
Please note the correct spelling is chords, not cords. A cord belongs in the throat and is also a patching capability from guitar to amplifier. A chord is a combination of three or more notes on a given scale.
