Difference between Jazz and Classical Piano?
So I really want to learn how to play the piano, and my parents are getting me an electric one for my birthday, and when we went to look for classes we had to choose between classical and jazz piano classes. I’m not sure what the difference is between them though. Basically i don’t know ANYTHING about playing the piano, even the basics! So which class should i choose to take?
In general in classical piano the instrument is treated as a solo voice, all parts of the piano music are important and scored out. While in Jazz, the piano is a part of the rhythm section of a group. Often times music is scored out as a simple melody line and chords. Those chords may be well defined, or very basic leaving a lot for the pianist to interpret.
If you really want to learn to read music, follow the classical program. If you’re more interested in « playing for fun » the jazz program might be the route to follow.
… don’t expect that the jazz program will let you off easy though. There is a LOT of theory you have to know to be able to think on the fly for improvisation.
