Does learning to play an instrument enhance listening pleasure?
I love classical music, but I am clueless when it comes to reading, writing, or performing music. I was thinking that if I got a cheap midi keyboard and a self-teaching piano program from emedia and learned the fundamentals it might enhance my enjoyment of the music. On the other hand it might detract from it; sort of like hearing an opera in a foreign language vs your own language as sometimes it’s better to not know what they are saying.
Also, could you recommend a decent but cheap midi keyboard?

In my opinion, learning to play music increases listening pleasure exponentially because you gain a greater respect and appreciation for the difficulty of writing and performing the pieces you enjoy. It’s true even for multiple instruments. For example, I didn’t really understand and appreciate guitar playing until I started doing it myself, even though I had already been playing drums for years.
As far as buying a keyboard, at the lower end of the scale they’re pretty much all the same: weaker tones, limited functionality, etc. Since you’re interested in classical music, I would have one word of advice – find a keyboard you can afford with weighted keys, which mimic the feel of playing an actual piano. It’s difficult to understand the intricacies of performance and proper dynamics with the unweighted keys, which take little to no pressure to use.
