what kind of musical instrument is the piano-stringed or percussion?
I have read an article saying that the piano is actually a percussion instrument because sound is produced by hammering the strings inside it when the pianist hit the keys.
It is both a chordophone (an instrument where strings produce their sound by means of a resonating chamber) and a PERCUSSION instrument. The strings of a piano are hit with hammers. Hitting is the criterion for percussion (irrespective whether it is a string, a piece of wood, a sheet of brass or a slice of other tuned metal which is struck).
A xylophone isn’t a woodwind instrument because it has wooden bars, nor is a gong a brass instrument because it is made of brass. Neither is a piano a string instrument just because what is ‘percussed’ happens to be a set of tuned strings.
