i am going to buy an antique piano how can i know if it’s real or fake ivory ?
the piano is about 100 years old and the keys are so yellow how can i identify if it’s real or fake ivory & how can i make them whiter again ? thanks
If the keys are yellow, they are probably ivory. Ivory is made up of the same material as your teeth.
I have heard that tooth paste applied with a soft brush and rinsed off with milk will work to slowly whiten the keys.
I do know that professionals use hydroden peroxide and ultra violet light. This is the same procedure used by dentists to whiten teeth.
What ever you try, only do it in a small section on one key as a test. That way you can control and decide if you want to continue.
The yellowing is caused by oils in your fingers over time. Once you get them white again, wash your hands every time you play the piano. This will prevent future yellowing.
