What do you think this poem is saying and do you like it?
(I know what it’s trying to say and I like this poem. However I want to hear your thoughts and opinions. Please be as detailed as you can.)
Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;
Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see
A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings
And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings.
In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song
Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong
To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside
And hymns in the cosy parlour, the tinkling piano our guide.
So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamour
With the great black piano appassionato. The glamour
Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast
Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past.
I can’t be too detailed. What I see is the nostalgia for the feelings behind the memories, I almost wrote momeries. But we have those feelings now. I cherish the feelings now, and don’t see them as in the past, but with me now, just like my old cat is a joy today and forever, so I don’t pin that he is not here now. If he were here now I wouldn’t like to have to change his kitty litter and pay him all the attention that a pet really needs. We never did or could have or could now.
I cherish my wife, although she has left for another. The memories are to good to spoil with having to actually go through it all again. How much better are the memories. The feelings never leave me, so I feel I have lost nothing. I still have the best of it all. How soon we forget the bad anyway. Would you really want to be told when to go to bed and get up and what to eat when and to stay in the house? Not me. Freeedom.
