Did Billy Joel use the song « Mr. Bojangles » to write « Piano Man »?
I noticed recently that the song « Piano Man » by Billy Joel sounds remarkably similar to « Mr. Bojangles », meaning the music, not the words. I searched on the internet to see if anyone had any info on it, but I could not find anything. Am I the only one who has noticed this? I remember that Huey Lewis sued for plagiarism when the song « Ghost Busters » came out because it sounded to him like the song « I Want a New Drug », but « Piano Man » and « Mr. Bojangles » sound far more similar to each other than « Ghost Busters » and « I Want a New Drug » sound. What do other folks in Yahoo think?
I see what you mean. The « met a man, Bojangles… » part does sound a little like the « sing us a song, you’re the piano man » part of Joel’s song, and they both do have a certain downbeat quality to them, but I really don’t think it’s enough to base a lawsuit on.
