Was Franz Joseph haydn good violinist? What his violin concertos say about him?
He was certainly a competent violinist, having studied the instrument as a child, but this was the case for many composers of the period. Mozart was very competent indeed on both the violin and the viola, and Beethoven too was trained on both these string instruments during his youth, eventually keeping himself and his siblings from penury by working as a violist in the Bonn Court orchestra. Of these three, Mozart actively appeared in the role of soloist on both instruments from time to time, something the other two are not known to have done.
Haydn’s concertos, all of them, not just the violin concertos, show him to be the highly competent craftsman that he was at the time of their writing, but unlike Mozart and Beethoven, the concerto form does not set his imagination alight the way it does his colleagues’ creative spurs. They are effective, they are very well crafted, but nothing transcending those qualities ever seems quite to get off the ground.
If anything, his Bb major Sinfonia Concertante, showcasing pairs of string and woodwind soloists, seems to ‘light his fire’ to the greatest degree of all his concertante output, having a distinctly ‘personal’ character about it that just about all his other concertos singularly lack.
Haydn is congenitally unable to write bad music, but compared with his works in which he is writing to his absolute strengths — the symphonies, chamber works, masses and oratorios — his concertos, like a number of his operas, always seem to struggle to be genuinely ‘to the manor born’…
