Tough call but I would go with Elton. He was a child prodigy who started playing when he was 4 and took piano lessons at 7. At 11 he had a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy where he impressed his instructors. The call is that if he had been interested he had the ability to be a classical pianist.
Not that Billy Joel is a hack by any means. His father was a classical pianist, and by 14 he was playing for groups. He also said in an interview that he would make up phony Bach numbers because he would be bored practicing his lessons.
So I give the edge to Elton – I think ability wise he probably is the more talented pianist. However, they are both tremendous performers, and both deserve the title of Piano man.
