Is there anywhere to buy Yamaha piano parts?
I have a Yamaha U3 piano and I want to replace some parts by myself, such as the pads on the hammers inside the piano, and the wires/strings (whatever you want to call them). Then, after the customization is finished, I also want to attempt to tune the piano myself (sharpness/flatness of the notes isn’t an issue here.)
Now the question itself: do you guys know where I can get the tools for customizing the piano itself, the parts, and the tools for tuning the piano? I live around the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) in Canada, and I would appreciate it if anybody could tell me if the parts or tools are available for sale anywhere.
Thanks!
Schaff is a good supply house, but ask yourself WHY you are replacing anything inside the piano.
I cannot imagine that hammers need to be replaced even if this piano is 30 years old. Voicing by a professional technician will cost a heck of a lot less than hammers and the tools required to replace them. For what it’s worth, you can buy hammer heads or hammer heads mounted on shanks. If you buy them on the shanks your job is easier, but the strike line probably won’t be right. And when you’re done replacing hammer heads you’ve got to completely regulate the action and then you’ve still got to voice the instrument.
If you replace your hammer heads and botch the job (which you will do – guaranteed) expect to spend about twice as much to have a technician redo your work since he has to divine the strike line from scratch rather than from known reference points.
Not meaning to burst your bubble, but unless you’re going to take on piano technology as a full-time job, it’s not worth your investment.
Been there, done that, don’t do it no more. ‘cept my own instrument.
