Antique Piano: where can I find the value?
I have an unusual baby grand piano and my family has been moving it around forever. Where can I find out the age (can’t find a serial # anywhere on it) and the value?
Antiques are usually defined as being over a hundred years old, but it’s the pre-victorian ones that have most rarity value.
Baby grand piano was introduced in 1920, it’s simply a grand piano under 5’8″ in length.These pianos are of very good quality and if properly restored can give very good price.It is very difficult to ascertain the value of instruments without being able to physically inspect them in person.
Almost any instrument can be dated by locating the serial number inside the instrument.The two most likely places are just inside the top of the piano, or stamped on the back of the piano.
With this serial number, most piano tuners can look up the date of your instrument in a book called « The Pierce Piano Atlas ». There are several resources online that offer to look up this information for a small fee.
Datemarks are a much more accurate and reliable guide to the age of an instrument, but it can often be quite a problem finding and interpreting datemarks in pianos, and many instruments are not marked at all .The keyboards were usually made by a separate firm, and may have a label under the bottom key, or a date written or imprinted on the side of the bottom key. Occasionally, this is done on the second or third key, so it is worth checking a few if you know how to remove keys safely.
Otherwise, ask your tuner to look, It is less expensive to have a technician look inside a piano than to have the piano reassembled.
